An Astrologer's Day Bengali Meaning
Punctually (পাংচুয়ালি) at midday he opened his bag and spread (স্প্রেড) out his professional equipment (প্রফেশনাল ইকুইপমেন্ট), which consisted (কনসিসটেড) of a dozen cowrie shells (ডজন কড়ি শেলস্), a square piece (স্কোয়ার পিস্) of cloth with obscure mystic charts (অবস্কিয়র মিসটিক চার্টস্) on it, a notebook and a bundle of palmyra (প্যালমিরা) writing.

“I should have been dead if some passerby had not chanced to peep into the well,” exclaimed the other, overwhelmed by enthusiasm.
“আমি মরে যেতাম যদি কিছু পথচারি কুয়োর মধ্যে উঁকি না দিত,” অন্যজন চিৎকার করে বলল, উত্তেজনায় ডুবে গিয়ে।
“When shall I get at him?” he asked, clenching his fist.
“কখন আমি তাকে পাব?” সে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, তার মুঠি চেপে ধরে।
“In the next world,” answered the astrologer.
“পরলোকে,” জ্যোতিষী উত্তর দিল।
“He died four months ago in a far-off town. You will never see any more of him.” The other groaned on hearing it. The astrologer proceeded :
“সে মারা গেছে চার মাস আগে দূরের এক শহরে। তুমি আর তাকে কখনই দেখতে পাবে না।” অন্যজন এটা শুনে গভীর আর্তনাদ করল। জ্যোতিষী বলা চালিয়ে গেলেন:

“গুরু নায়ক-”
“You know my name!” the other said, taken aback.
“আপনি আমার নাম জানেন!” অন্যজন বলল, হতবাক হয়ে।
“As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say.
“যেমন আমি আরও অনেক কিছু জানি। গুরু নায়ক, আমি কী বলতে চাই মন দিয়ে শোনো।
Your village is two days’ journey due north of this town. Take the next train and be gone.

I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home.”

He took out a pinch of sacred ash and held it out to him.

“Why should I leave home again?” the other said reflectively.

“I was only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him.” He shook his head regretfully.
“আমি শুধুমাত্র এদিক ওদিক ঘুরে বেড়িয়েছি তাকে খোঁজার জন্য এবং গলা টিপে তার জীবন শেষ করার জন্য যদি আমার সাথে তার দেখা হয়।” সে দুঃখজনকভাবে তার মাথা নাড়াল।
“He has escaped my hands. I hope at least he died as he deserved.”
“সে আমার হাত থেকে পালিয়ে গেছে। আমি আশা করি অন্তত সে মারা গেছে যেভাবে সে মারা যাওয়ার যোগ্য।”
“Yes,” said the astrologer. “He was crushed under a lorry.” The other looked gratified to hear it.
“হ্যাঁ,” জ্যোতিষী উত্তর দিল। “সে একটা লরির তলায় চাপা পড়েছে।” এটা শুনে অন্যজনকে আনন্দিত দেখালো।
The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and put them into his bag.

“I can buy some jaggery and coconut tomorrow. The child has been asking for sweets for so many days now. I will prepare some nice stuff for her.”

“The swine has cheated me! He promised me a rupee,” said the astrologer.
“শুয়োর আমাকে ঠকিয়েছে! সে আমাকে একটাকা দেবে বলে প্রতিজ্ঞা করেছিল,” জ্যোতিষী বললেন।
She looked up at him. “You look worried. What is wrong?”

“Nothing.”

After dinner, sitting on the pyol, he told her, “Do you know a great load is gone from me today?
