The Parrot's Tale Bengali Meaning
Once there was a bird.
একদা একটা পাখি ছিল।
It was an utterly foolish bird.
সে ছিল একেবারে বোকা পাখি।
It sang songs, but did not read the scriptures.
সে গাই গাইত, কিন্তু শাস্ত্র পড়ত না।
It flew, it jumped, but did not have the faintest sense of etiquette.
সে উড়ত, সে লাফাত, কিন্তু শিষ্টাচার (ভদ্রতা) সম্পর্কে সামান্যতম জ্ঞান ছিল না।
The King said, “Such birds! They are of no use at all. They only eat the fruits in the orchards and the royal fruit-market runs a deficit.”
রাজা বললেন, “এমন পাখি! তারা আদৌও কোনো কাজের নয়। তারা শুধুমাত্র ফলের বাগানের ফল খায় আর রাজ ফল-বাজারের লোকসান ঘটায়।
He called the minister, and commanded, “Educate it.”
তিনি তার মন্ত্রীকে ডাকলেন, এবং নির্দেশ দিলেন, “এটাকে শিক্ষা দাও।”
The King’s nephew was given the responsibility of educating the bird.
রাজার ভাগ্নেকে দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছিল পাখিটিকে শিক্ষিত করার।
The scholars held long discussions, the subject being – “What is the reason behind the foolishness of this creature?”
পন্ডিত ব্যক্তিরা দীর্ঘ আলোচনা করলেন, বিষয়টা ছিল – “এই প্রানীটার মূর্খতার পেছনে কারণটা কী?”
The conclusion was: much learning could not be stored in the tiny nest that the bird could make with just chips and twigs.
সিদ্ধান্ত হল: বেশি বিদ্যা সঞ্চয় করে রাখা সম্ভব নয় সেই ছোট্ট বাসাতে যেটা পাখি বানাত শুধুমাত্র পাথরের টুকরো আর ডালপালা দিয়ে।
So, first of all, it was necessary to build a good cage for it.
তাই, সবার আগে, তার জন্য একটা ভালো খাঁচা তৈরি করা দরকার।
The scholars got amply rewarded and went home merrily.
পন্ডিতরা প্রচুর পরিমানে পুরস্কার পেলেন এবং আনন্দে বাড়ি গেলেন।
The goldsmith started building the cage.
স্বর্ণকার খাঁচা তৈরি করতে শুরু করলেন।
The cage turned out to be so exquisite that everyone under the sun rushed to see it.
খাঁচাটা এতই চমৎকার হল যে সেটা দেখার জন্য সকলে ছুটে এল।
Some said, “Education indeed!” Others said, “Education or no education, at least the bird has got the cage! What a lucky bird!”
কেউ বলল, “সত্যি বিদ্যা বটে!” অন্যরা বলল, “বিদ্যা হোক বা না হোক, অন্তত পাখিটার খাঁচা তো জুটেছে! কী ভাগ্যবান পাখি!”
The goldsmith got a bagful of rewards. He set out for home cheerfully.
স্বর্ণকার এক থলি ভর্তি পুরস্কার পেলেন। সে আনন্দের সাথে বাড়ির পথে রওনা দিল।
The pundit came to teach the bird. He took a pinch of snuff and said, “A few books won’t do.”
পন্ডিত এলেন পাখিটাকে শিক্ষা দিতে। তিনি এক চিমটে নস্যি নিলেন এবং বললেন, “এত কম বইয়ে হবে না।”
The nephew summoned the scribes.
ভাগ্নে লিপিকারদের (পুথিলেখক) ডাকলেন।
They copied from the books and copied from those copies and made an enormous mound of such things.
তারা বই থেকে নকল করল এবং সেই নকলগুলি থেকেও নকল করল আর সেগুলোর একটা বিশাল স্তূপ তৈরি করল।
Whoever saw it, said, “Bravo! Learning is going to overflow!”
যে এটা দেখল, সেই বলল, “সাবাস! বিদ্যা একেবারে উপচে পড়ছে!”
The scribes got cartfuls of rewards. At once they rushed home. None of their descendants faced any poverty ever since.

Repairs were quite frequent. Apart from that, there was the washing and the cleaning and the polishing of the cage.

The words reached the King’s ears. He called the nephew and said, “What’s this I hear, dear nephew?”

The nephew said, “Your Majesty! If you want to know the truth then call the goldsmith, send for the pundits and the scribes, summon the repairmen and their supervisors.
ভাগ্নে বলল, “মহারাজ! যদি আপনি সত্যিটা জানতে চান তাহলে স্বর্ণকারদের ডাকুন, পন্ডিত এবং লিপিকারদের ডাকুন, মেরামতকারীদের এবং তাদের কর্মকর্তাদের ডাকুন।
The fault-finders cannot make both ends meet and talk nonsense.”
যারা দোষ খোঁজে তারা খেতে পায় না আর বাজে কথা বলে।”
The situation became crystal-clear to the King, and a gold necklace adorned the nephew’s neck.
পরিস্থিতি রাজার কাছে একেবারে স্পষ্ট হয়ে গেল, এবং একটা সোনার হার ভাগ্নের গলায় শোভা পেল।
The King wished to see for himself the lightning speed at which education was proceeding.
রাজা নিজে দেখতে চাইলেন কীরকম ঝড়ের গতিতে শিক্ষার অগ্রগতি হচ্ছে।
So one day he came to the education centre with his entire entourage of friends, companions and courtiers.
তাই তিনি একদিন শিক্ষাকেন্দ্রে আসলেন তাঁর সমস্ত অনুগামী বন্ধুবান্ধব, সঙ্গী এবং সভাসদদের নিয়ে।
As soon as he reached the entrance, there arose a chorus of bells and drums and harps and flutes and lyres and lutes and cellos and violins and cymbals and mandolins and trombones and bassoons and harpsichords and clavichords.
তিনি প্রবেশদ্বারে পৌঁছানো মাত্রই, একসাথে বেজে উঠল ঘন্টা, ঢাঁক, বীণা, বাঁশি, সুরবাহার, লিউট, চেলো, ভায়োলিন, করতাল, ম্যান্ডোলিন, ট্রোম্বোন, ব্যাসুন, হার্পসিকর্ড এবং ক্ল্যাভিকর্ড।
The pundits swung their pig-tails and started chanting hymns at the top of their voices.
পন্ডিতরা তাদের টিকি দোলাতে লাগলেন এবং উচ্চস্বরে স্তোত্র পাঠ করতে শুরু করলেন।
The repairmen and the labourers and the goldsmith and the scribes and the supervisors and the cousins greeted the King with a huge uproar.

The Nephew said, “Your Majesty! What do you think?”

The King was extremely pleased. He started back.
রাজা ভীষণ খুশি হলেন। তিনি ফিরে যেতে শুরু করলেন।
He came out of the front door and was about to ride his elephant, when a fault-finder, who had been hiding in a bush, yelled, “Your Majesty! Have you looked at the bird?”
তিনি সামনের দরজা দিয়ে বেরিয়ে এলেন আর যেই তিনি তাঁর হাতিতে উঠতে যাবেন, তখনই একজন দোষ খুঁজে বেড়ানো লোক, যে একটা ঝোড়ের মধ্যে লুকিয়ে ছিল, চিৎকার করে বলল, “মহারাজ! আপনি কি পাখিটিকে দেখেছেন?”
The King was startled. He said, “Oh! I forgot. I didn’t see the bird after all.”
রাজা চমকে উঠলেন। তিনি বললেন, “ওহ! আমি ভুলেই গিয়েছিলাম। আমি আদৌও পাখিটাকে দেখিনি।”
He went in once again and told the pundit, “I want to see your method of educating the bird.”
তিনি আবার ভেতরে গেলেন এবং পন্ডিতকে বললেন, “ আমি পাখিটিকে শিক্ষা দেওয়ার পদ্ধতি দেখতে চাই।”
And he saw it. Very pleasing indeed.
এবং তিনি দেখলেন। সত্যিই খুব মনোমুগ্ধকর ছিল।
The method was so overwhelming compared to the bird that one could hardly notice the bird.
পদ্ধতিটা পাখিটার তুলনায় এতই জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ ছিল যে পাখিটাকে প্রায় দেখাই যাচ্ছিল না।
It seemed it was rather irrelevant to look at the bird.

The King understood that the arrangements were faultless.

Only heaps of pages had been torn out from heaps of books; and with the tip of a pen, those pages were being stuffed into the bird’s mouth.
আছে শুধু বইয়ের গাদা থেকে ছেঁড়া পৃষ্ঠার স্তুপ; এবং একটা পেনের ডগা দিয়ে, সেই পৃষ্ঠাগুলিকে ঠেসে দেওয়া হচ্ছিল পাখিটার মুখে।
There was no room in the mouth for the bird to squeeze out a cry, let alone a tune.
পাখিটার মুখে একটা চিৎকার তো দূরের কথা, একফোঁটা আওয়াজ বেরোনোর মতোও জায়গা ছিল না।
It was really a terribly pleasing sight.
এটা ছিল সত্যিই একটা ভয়ঙ্কর রকমের মনোরম দৃশ্য।
This time, before mounting the elephant, the King ordered the ear-pulling expert to pull the fault-finder’s ears severely.

In a rather respectable and predictable way, the bird became half-dead as the days passed.

The guardians understood that the situation was hopeful.

His hits were absolutely spectacular!

An iron chain was manufactured and the wings of the bird were cut off.

The blacksmith became very well-to-do. His wife got gold ornaments.
কামার খুব ধনী হয়ে গেল। তার স্ত্রী সোনার গয়না পেল।
The administrator gained a title from the King for his alertness.
পরিচালক রাজার কাছ থেকে একটা উপাধি পেল তার সতর্কতার জন্য।
The bird died – no one knew when.
পাখিটা মারা গেল – কখন কেউ তা জানতে পারল না।
The infamous fault-finder spread the news, “The bird has died.”
সেই কুখ্যাত দোষ খুঁজে বেরানো লোকটি খবর ছড়িয়ে দিল যে, “পাখিটা মারা গেছে।”
The King called the nephew and asked, “Dear nephew, what is this that I hear?”
রাজা তাঁর ভাগ্নেকে ডাকলেন এবং জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “প্রিয় ভাগ্নে, আমি এসব কী শুনছি?”
The nephew said, “Your Majesty, the bird’s education is now complete.”
ভাগ্নে বলল, “মহারাজ, পাখিটার শিক্ষা এখন সম্পূর্ণ হয়েছে।”
The King asked, “Does it still jump?”
রাজা জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “সে কি এখনও লাফায়?”
The nephew said, “God forbid.”
ভাগ্নে বলল, “ভগবান না করুন।”
“Does it still fly?”
“সে কি এখনও ওড়ে?”
“No.”
“না।”
“Does it sing any more?”
“সে কি আর গান গায়?”
“No.”
“না।”
“Does it scream if it doesn’t get food?”
“সে কি চিৎকার করে যদি সে খাবার না পায়?”
“No.”
“না।”
The King said, “Bring the bird in. I would like to see it.”
রাজা বললেন, “পাখিটাকে নিয়ে এসো। আমি তাকে দেখতে চাই।”
The bird was brought in. With it came the administrator, the guards, the horsemen.
পাখিটাকে আনা হল। তার সাথে এল পরিচালক, প্রহরীরা, ও অশ্বারোহীরা।
The King felt the bird. It didn’t open its mouth and didn’t utter a word.
রাজা পাখিটাকে ছুঁলেন। সেটা তার মুখ খুলল না আর একটা কথাও বলল না।
Only the pages of books, stuffed inside its stomach, raised a ruffling sound.
শুধুমাত্র বইয়ের পৃষ্ঠাগুলো, যেগুলো ঠাসা ছিল তার পেটের মধ্যে, খসখস আওয়াজ করতে লাগল।
Outside, where the gentle south wind and the blossoming woods were heralding spring, the young green leaves filled the sky with a deep and heavy sigh.
বাইরে, যেখানে দক্ষিণা মৃদুমন্দ বাতাস আর ফুল ফোটা বন বসন্তের আগমনের বার্তা দিচ্ছিল, সেখানে কচি সবুজ পাতাগুলো আকাশ ভরিয়ে দিয়েছিল গুরুগম্ভীর দীর্ঘশ্বাসে।
