His brother used every day to look at the tree planted in the courtyard (কোর্টইয়ার্ড – উঠোন) by his own hand.

তার ভাই প্রতিদিন গাছটিকে দেখত যেটা লাগানো হয়েছিল উঠোনে তার নিজের হাত দিয়ে।

Hitherto (হিদারটো – এযাবৎ) he had found the leaves of a living green colour; but suddenly he found some leaves fading (ফেডিং – বিবর্ণ হয়ে যাওয়া).

এযাবৎ সে গাছের পাতার রং সবুজ দেখেছিল; কিন্তু হঠাৎই সে দেখতে পেল কিছু পাতা বিবর্ণ হয়ে যাচ্ছে। 

He gave the alarm (অ্যালার্ম – সতর্কবার্তা) to the king and queen, and told them how the leaves were fading.

সে রাজা ও রানিকে সতর্কবার্তা দিল, এবং বলল যে কীভাবে গাছের পাতাগুলি বিবর্ণ হয়ে যাচ্ছে। 

They concluded (কনক্লুডেড – সিদ্ধান্তে পৌঁছানো) that the life of the elder prince must be in great danger.

তারা এই সিদ্ধান্তে পৌঁচ্ছল যে বড়ো রাজকুমারের জীবন অবশ্যই কোনো বিপদে পড়েছে।

The younger prince therefore resolved (রিসল্ভড – সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া) to go to the help of his brother, but before going he planted a tree in the courtyard of the palace, similar to the one his brother had planted, and which was to be the index (ইনডেক্স – সূচক) of the manner of his life.

তাই ছোটো রাজকুমার তার দাদাকে সাহায্যের জন্য যাওয়ার সিন্ধান্ত নিল, কিন্তু যাওয়ার আগে সে উঠোনে একটা গাছ লাগিয়ে গেল, ঠিক যেমনটা তার দাদা লাগিয়েছিল, আর যেটা ছিল তার জীবন পদ্ধতির সূচক।

He chose the swiftest (সুইফটেস্ট – সবচেয়ে দ্রুততম) steed (স্টিড – তেজি ঘোড়া) in the king’s stables (স্টেবলস – আস্তাবল), and galloped (গ্যালোপড – দ্রুত অগ্রসর হওয়া) towards the forest.

সে রাজার আস্তাবল থেকে সবচেয়ে দ্রুততম ঘোড়া বেছে নিল, এবং বনের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা শুরু করল। 

In the way he saw a dog with a puppy, and the puppy thinking that the rider (রাইডার – অশ্বচালক) was the same that had taken away his fellow-cub-for the two princes were exactly like each other-said, “As you have taken away my brother, take me also with you.”

পথে সে একটা কুকুরছানার সাথে একটা কুকুরকে দেখল, আর কুকুরছানাটি ভাবল যে সওয়ারটি একই ব্যক্তি যে তার সঙ্গী ছানাটিকে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল – কারণ দুই রাজকুমারই একই রকম দেখতে ছিল – বলল, “যেহেতু তুমি আমার ভাইকে নিয়ে গেছ, সেহেতু আমাকেও তোমার সাথে নিয়ে চলো।” 

The younger prince understanding that his brother had taken away a puppy, he took up that cub (কাব – পশুশাবক) as a companion (কমপ্যানিওন – সঙ্গী).

ছোটো রাজকুমার বুঝতে পারল যে তার দাদা একটা কুকুরছানাকে নিয়ে গেছে, সে কুকুরছানাটিকে তার সঙ্গী হিসাবে তুলে নিল।

Further on, a young hawk, which was perched (পার্চড – দাঁড়ে বসা) on a tree on the roadside, said to the prince, “You have taken away my brother; take me also, I beseech (বিসিজ – অনুরোধ করা) you”; on which the younger prince readily took it up.

আরও একটু যাওয়ার পর, একটা ছোটো বাজপাখি, যেটা রাস্তার ধারে একটা গাছের উপর বসেছিল, রাজকুমারকে বলল, “তুমি আমার ভাইকে নিয়ে গেছ; আমাকেও নিয়ে চলো, আমি তোমাকে অনুরোধ করছি”; রাজকুমার তাকেও সাগ্রহে তুলে নিল।

With these companions he went into the heart of the forest, where he saw a hut which he supposed (সাপোসড – মনে করা) to be the mendicant’s.

ওই সঙ্গীগুলোকে নিয়ে সে বনের গভীরে চলে গেল, যেখানে সে একটা কুঁড়েঘর দেখতে পেল যেটাকে সে ভিক্ষুকের কুঁড়েঘর বলে মনে করল। 

But neither the mendicant nor his brother was there.

কিন্তু ভিক্ষুক বা তার দাদা কেউই সেখানে ছিল না। 

Not knowing what to do or where to go, he dismounted (ডিসমাউন্টেড – নেমে পড়া) from his horse, allowed it to graze (গ্রেজ – চড়ে বেরানো), while he himself sat inside the house.

কী করবে বা কোথায় যাবে না জেনে, সে তার ঘোড়া থেকে নেমে পড়ল, ঘোড়াটিকে একটু চড়ে বেড়াতে দিল, যখন সে নিজে কুঁড়েঘরের ভেতরে বসে রইল। 

At sunset the mendicant returned to his hut, and seeing the younger prince, said, “I am glad (গ্ল্যাড – আনন্দিত) to see you.

সূর্যাস্তের সময় ভিক্ষুক তার কুঁড়েঘরে ফিরল, আর ছোটো রাজকুমারকে দেখে, বলল, “আমি তোমাকে দেখে আনন্দিত হয়েছি।

I told your brother never to go towards the north, for evil (এভিল – শয়তান) in that case would betide (বিটাইড – ঘটা) him; but it seems that, disobeying (ডিসওবেয়িং – অমান্য করা) my orders, he has gone to the north and has fallen into the toils (টয়েলস – ফাঁদ) of a Rakshasi who lives there.

আমি তোমার দাদাকে উত্তর দিকে যেতে বারন করেছিলাম, কারন অশুভ শক্তি তার ক্ষতি করতে পারে; কিন্তু মনে হচ্ছে যে, আমার আদেশ অমান্য করে, সি উত্তর দিকে গেছে আর পা দিয়েছে রাক্ষসীর ফাঁদে যে সেখানে বাস করে। 

There is no hope of rescuing (রেসকিউইং – উদ্ধার করা) him; perhaps he has already been devoured (ডেভারড – খেয়ে ফেলা).”

তাকে উদ্ধার করার আর কোনো আশা নেই; সম্ভবত তাকে খেয়ে ফেলা হয়েছে।”

The younger prince forthwith (ফোর্থউইথ – অবিলম্বে) went towards the north, where he saw a stag which he pierced (পিয়ার্সড – বিদ্ধ করা) with an arrow.

রাজকুমার সাথে সাথে উত্তরদিকের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করল, যেখানে সে একটা পুরুষ হরিণ দেখতে পেল যাকে সে একটা তীর দিয়ে বিদ্ধ করল।

The stag ran into a house which stood by, and the younger prince followed it.

হরিণটি কাছেই একটা বাড়ির ভেতরে দৌড়ে ঢুকে গেল, এবং ছোটো রাজকুমার তাকে অনুসরন করল। 

He was not a little astonished (অ্যাশটোনিশড – অবাক হওয়া) when, instead of seeing a stag, he saw a woman of exquisite (এক্সকুইসিট – ভীষণ) beauty.

সে খুব একটা অবাক হল না যখন, হরিণ দেখার পরিবের্তে, সে একটা অসাধারণ মহিলাকে দেখতে পেল।

He immediately (ইমিডিয়েটলি – ততক্ষনাৎ) concluded, from what he had heard from the mendicant, that the pretended (প্রিটেন্ডেড – ছলনা করা) woman was none other than the Rakshasi in whose power his brother was.

সে ততক্ষনাৎ এই সিদ্ধান্তে পৌঁছল, যা সে ভিক্ষকের কাছে শুনেছিল, যে ছদ্মবেশী মহিলা রাক্ষসী ছাড়া আর কেউ নন যার অধীনে তার দাদা ছিল।

The lady asked him to play a game of dice with her.

মহিলাটি তাকে তার সাথে একদান পাশা খেলতে বলল। 

He complied (কমপ্লাইড – মেনে চলা) with the request, and on the same conditions on which the elder prince had played.

সে অনুরোধটি মেনে নিল, এবং সেই একই শর্তে যেভাবে বড়ো রাজকুমার খেলেছিল।

The younger prince won; on which the lady produced the young hawk from the hole and gave it to the prince.

ছোটো রাজকুমার জিতে গেল; যার ফলে মহিলাটি গর্ত থেকে ছোটো বাজপাখিটিকে বের করল এবং সেটা রাজকুমারকে দিয়ে দিল। 

The joy of the two hawks on meeting each other was great.

দুটো বাজপাখির পরস্পরের দেখা হওয়াটা ছিল বিরাট আনন্দের। 

The lady and the prince played a second time, and the prince won again.

মহিলাটি এবং রাজকুমার দ্বিতীয়বার খেলল, এবং আবার রাজকুমার জিতে গেল।

The lady therefore brought to the prince the young puppy lying (লাইং – শুয়ে থাকা) in the hole.

তাই মহিলাটি গর্তে শুয়ে থাকা কুকুরছানাটি রাজকুমারকে দিয়ে দিল।

They played a third time, and the prince won a third time.

তারা তৃতীয়বার খেলল, এবং রাজকুমার তৃতীয়বারও জিতে গেল।

The lady demurred (ডিমারড – সংকোচ করা) to producing a young man exactly like the prince, pretending that it was impossible to get one ; but on the prince insisting (ইনসিসটিং – জেদ ধরা) upon the fulfilment of the condition, his brother was produced (প্রোডিউসড – হাজির করা).

মহিলাটি রাজকুমারের মতো একজন যুবক দিতে অস্বীকার করল, ভান করল যে এটা পাওয়া অসম্ভব; কিন্তু শর্ত পূরণ করার জন্য রাজকুমার জেদ করায়, তার দাদাকে হাজির করা হল। 

The joy of the two brothers on meeting each other was great.

পরস্পরকে দেখে দুই ভাইয়ের আনন্দ ছিল দারুণ।

The Rakshasi said to the princes, “Don’t kill me, and I will tell you a secret which will save the life of the elder prince.”

রাক্ষসী রাজকুমারদের বলল, “আমাকে হত্যা করো না, আর আমি তোমাদেরকে একটা গোপন কথা বলব যেটা বড়ো রাজকুমারের জীবন বাঁচাবে।”

She then told them that the mendicant was a worshipper (ওরশিপার – পূজারি) of the goddess (গডেস – দেবী) Kali, who had a temple (টেম্পল – মন্দির) not far off; that he be-longed to that sect of Hindus who seek (সিক – সন্ধান করা) perfection (পারফেকশান – পরিপূর্নতা) from intercourse (ইন্টারকোর্স – মিলন) with the spirits of departed (ডিপার্টেড – প্রয়াত) men;

তারপর সে বলল যে ভিক্ষুক হল দেবী কালির পূজারি, যার কাছেই একটা মন্দির আছে; সে হিন্দুদের সেই সম্প্রদায়ের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল যারা প্রয়াত পুরুষদের আত্মার সাথে মিলনের মাধ্যমে পরিপূর্ণতা খোঁজে; 

that he had already sacrificed (স্যাক্রিফাইসড – বলি দেওয়া) at the altar of Kali six human victims whose skulls (স্কালস – মাথার খুলি) could be seen in niches (নিশেস – কুলুঙ্গি) inside her temple; that he would become perfect when the seventh victim was sacrificed; and that the elder prince was intended (ইনটেন্ডেড – লক্ষ্য) for the seventh victim.

সে ইতিমধ্যে কালির বেদীতে ছয়টি মানুষের বলি দিয়েছে যাদের মাথার খুলি তাঁর মন্দিরের ভেতরের কুলুঙ্গিতে দেখা যেতে পারে; সে পরিপূর্ণতা লাভ করবে যখন সপ্তম শিকার বলি দেওয়া হবে; বড়ো রাজকুমারকে সপ্তম বলির জন্যই রাখা হয়েছে। 

The Rakshasi then told the prince to go immediately to the temple to find out the truth of what she had said.

তারপর রাক্ষসী রাজকুমারদের অবিলম্বে মন্দিরে যেতে বলল সে যা বলেছে তা যাচাই করার জন্য।

To the temple they accordingly (অ্যাকোর্ডিংলি – কথামতো) went. When the elder prince went inside the temple, the skulls in the niches laughed a ghastly (ঘ্যাস্টলি – বীভৎস) laugh.

সেইমতো তারা মন্দিরে গেল। যখন বড়ো রাজকুমার মন্দিরের ভেতরে গেল, তখন কুলুঙ্গিতে রাখা মাথার খুলিগুলো বীভৎস হাসি হেসে উঠেছিল।

Horror-struck at the sight and sound, he inquired the cause of the laughter; and the skulls told him that they were glad because they were about to get another added to their number.

দৃশ্য এবং শব্দে আতঙ্কিত হয়ে, তারা হাসির কারন জানতে চাইল; এবং মাথার খুলিগুলো তাকে বলর যে তারা খুশি কারণ তাদের সংখ্যায় আরও একজন যোগ হতে চলেছে।

One of the skulls, as spokesman of the rest, said, “Young prince, in a few days the mendicant’s devotions (ডেভোশানস – ভক্তি / পূজা) will be completed, and you will be brought into this temple and your head will be cut off, and you will keep company with us.

মাথার খুলিগুলোর মধ্যে একজন, বাকিদের মুখপাত্র হিসাবে, বলল, “যুবক রাজকুমার, কয়েক দিনের মধ্যেই ভিক্ষুকের পূজা শেষ হবে, আর তোমাকে এই মন্দিরে আনা হবে এবং তোমার মাথা কেটে ফেলা হবে, আর তুমি আমাদের সঙ্গ দেবে। 

But there is one way by which you can escape (এসকেপ – পালিয়ে যাওয়া) that fate (ফেট – ভাগ্য) and do us good.”

কিন্তু একটা উপায় আছে যার মাধ্যমে তুমি এই ভাগ্য থেকে বাঁচতে পার আর আমাদের ভালো করতে পার।”

“Oh, do tell me,” said the prince, “what that way is, and I promise to do you all the good I can.”

“ওহ, কী করতে হবে আমাকে বলো,” রাজকুমার বলল, “কী সেই উপায়, আর আমি প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছি আমি তোমাদের জন্য যা ভালো করতে পারি করব।”

The skull replied, “When the mendicant brings you into this temple to offer you up as a sacrifice, before cutting off your head he will tell you to prostrate (প্রোসট্রেট – সাষ্টাঙ্গে প্রণাম করা) yourself before Mother Kali, and while you prostrate yourself he will cut off your head.

মাথার খুলি উত্তর দিল, “যখন ভিক্ষুক তোমাকে এই মন্দিরে নিয়ে আসবে বলি দেওয়ার জন্য, তোমার মাথা কাটার আগে সে তোমাকে বলবে কালি মায়ের সামনে সাষ্টাঙ্গে প্রনাম করতে, আর যখনই তুমি সাষ্টাঙ্গে প্রনাম করবে তখনই সে তোমার মাথা কেটে ফেলবে।

But take our advice, when he tells you to bow down before Kali, you tell him that as a prince you never bowed down to any one, that you never knew what bowing down was, and that the mendicant should show it to you by himself doing it in your presence (প্রেসেন্স – উপস্থিতি).

কিন্তু আমাদের পরামর্শ নাও, যখন সে তোমাকে কালির সামনে মাথা নত করতে বলবে, তখন তুমি বলবে যে একজন রাজকুমার হওয়ার জন্য তুমি কখনও কারোর সামনে মাথা নত করোনি, তাই তুমি জানো না মাথা নত করা কী জিনিস, আর তোমরা উপস্থিতিতেই ভিক্ষুক নিজেই দেখিয়ে দেবে তোমাকে এটা কী করে করতে হয়।

And when he bows down to show you how it is done, you take up your sword and separate (সেপারেট – আলাদা করা) his head from his body.

আর যখন সে মাথা নত করবে তোমকে দেখানোর জন্য কীভাবে এটা করতে হয়, তখন তুমি তোমার তরোয়ারি বের করবে এবং তার মাথা তার শরীর থেকে আলাদা করে দিবে।

And when you do that we shall all be restored (রিসটোর্ড – পুনরায় ফিরিয়ে দেওয়া) to life, as the mendicant’s vows (ভোস – প্রতিজ্ঞা) will be unfulfilled (আনফিল্ড – অসম্পূর্ণ).”

আর যখন তুমি এটা করবে তখন আমরা সকলে জীবন ফিরে পাব, যেহেতু ভিক্ষুকের প্রতিজ্ঞা অসম্পূর্ণ থাকবে।” 

The elder prince thanked the skulls for their advice, and went into the hut of the mendicant along with his younger brother.

বড়ো রাজকুমার মাথার খুলিগুলোকে ধন্যবাদ জানাল তাদের উপদেশের জন্য, এবং তার ভাইয়ের সঙ্গে ভিক্ষুকের কুঁড়ে ঘরে চলে গেল।
