A Ghostly Wife Bengali Meaning
Once on a time there lived a Brahman who had married a wife, and who lived in the same house with his mother.
কোনো এক সময়ে এক ব্রাহ্মন বাস করত যে একজন মহিলাকে বিয়ে করেছিল, এবং সে তার মায়ের সাথে একই বাড়িতে বাস করত।
Near his house was a tank (ট্যাঙ্ক – জলাশয়), on the embankment (এমব্যাঙ্কমেন্ট – পাড় / বাঁধ) of which stood a tree, on the boughs (বাউস – ডালপালা) of which lived a ghost of the kind called Sankchinni.
তার বাড়ির কাছেই একটা পুকুর ছিল, যার পাড়ে একটা গাছ ছিল, যার ডালে বাস করত শাঁখচুন্নি নামে একটা ভূত।
One night the Brahman’s wife had occasion (ওকেশন – প্রয়োজন) to go to the tank, and as she went she brushed by a Sankchinni who stood near; on which the she-ghost got very angry with the woman, seized (সেইজড – ধরা) her by the throat (থ্রোট – গলা), climbed into her tree, and thrust (থ্রাস্ট – ঠেলে ঢুকিয়ে দেওয়া) her into a hole (হোল – গর্ত) in the trunk (ট্রাংক – গাছের গুঁড়ি).
একদিন রাত্রে ব্রাহ্মনের স্ত্রীর পুকুরে যাওয়ার প্রয়োজন হয়েছিল, আর যখন সে গিয়েছিল তখন কাছেই দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা এক শাঁখচুন্নির গা ঘেঁষে গিয়েছিল; যার ফলে স্ত্রী-ভূতটি মহিলার উপর রেগে যায়, খপ করে তার গলা চেপে ধরে, তার গাছের উপরে উঠে যায়, এবং গাছের গুঁড়ির একটি গর্তে তাকে ঠেলে ঢুকিয়ে দেয়।
There the woman lay almost dead with fear. The ghost put on the clothes of the woman and went into the house of the Brahman.
সেখানে মহিলাটি ভয়ে মৃতপ্রায় হয়ে শুয়ে থাকল। ভূতটি মহিলাটির জামাকাপড় পড়ে নিল এবং ব্রাহ্মনের বাড়িতে চলে গেল।
Neither the Brahman not his mother had any inkling (ইঙ্কলিংক – আভাস) of the change.
ব্রাহ্মন এবং তার মা পরিবর্তনের কোনো আভাস পেল না।
The Brahman thought his wife returned from the tank, and the mother thought that it was her daughter-in-law.
ব্রাহ্মন ভাবল তার স্ত্রী পুকুর থেকে ফিরে এসেছে, এবং মা ভাবল যে এটা তার পুত্রবধূ।
Next morning the mother-in-law discovered (ডিসকভার্ড – আবিষ্কার করা) some change in her daughter-in-law.
পরের দিন সকালবেলায় শাশুড়ি তার পুত্রবধূর মধ্যে কিছু পরিবর্তন লক্ষ করল।
Her daughter-in-law, she knew, was costitutionally weak and languid, and took a long time to do the work of the house.

হঠাৎই সে খুবই সক্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছিল। সে এখন বাড়ির কাজ অবিশ্বাস্যভাবে খুব কম সময়ে করে ফেলত।
Suspecting (সাসপেক্টিং – সন্দেহ করা) nothing, the old woman said nothing either to her son or to her daughter-in-law; on the contrary (কনট্রারি – বিপরীতে), she inly (ইনলি – মনে মনে) rejoiced (রিজয়েসড – আনন্দিত হওয়া) that her daughter-in-law had turned over a new leaf.
কোনোকিছু সন্দেহ না করেই, বৃদ্ধ মহিলা তার ছেলে বা তার পুত্রবধূ কাউকেই কিছু বললেন না; অন্যদিকে, তিনি মনে মনে আনন্দিত হলেন যে তার পুত্রবধূর ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন ঘটেছে।
But her surprise became every day greater and greater. The cooking of the household was done in much less time than before.

When the mother-in-law wanted the daughter-in-law to bring anything from the next room, it was brought in much less time than was required (রিকোয়ার্ড – প্রয়োজনীয়) in walking from one room to the other.
যখন শাশুড়ি পুত্রবধূকে পাশেরঘর থেকে কিছু আনতে বলত, তখন একঘর থেকে পাশেরঘরে যেতে যে সময় লাগত সেই সময়ের আগেই সেটাকে এনে দেওয়া হত।
The ghost, instead of (ইনস্টিড অফ – পরিবর্তে) going inside the next room, would stretch (স্ট্রেচ – প্রসারিত করা) a long arm – for ghosts can lengthen (লেনথেন – বাড়ানো) or shorten (শর্টেন – ছোটো করা) any limb of their bodies – from the door and get the thing. one day the old woman observed (অবসার্ভড – পর্যবেক্ষন করা) the ghost doing this.
ভূত, পাশের ঘরে যাওয়ার পরিবর্তে, একটা লম্বা হাত বাড়াত – কারণ ভূতেরা তাদের শরীরের বিভিন্ন অঙ্গকে বড়ো বা ছোটো করতে পারত – দরজা থেকে আর জিনিসটা পেয়ে যেত। একদিন বৃদ্ধ মহিলাটি ভূতটিকে এইরকম করতে দেখলেন।
She ordered her to bring a vessel (ভেসেল – পাত্র) from some distance, and the ghost unconsciously (আনকনশিয়াসলি – অসচেতনভাবে) stretched her hand to several yards’ (ইয়ার্ডস – গজ) distance, and brought it in a thrice.
তিনি তাকে আদেশ দিলেন কিছুটা দূর থেকে একটা পাত্র আনার জন্য, আর ভূতটি অসচেতনভাবে তার হাতটা বাড়াল কয়েক গজ পর্যন্ত, আর সেটাকে ততক্ষনাৎ আনা হল।
The old woman was struck with wonder at the sight. She said noghing to her, but spoke to her son.
এই দৃশ্য দেখে বৃদ্ধ মহিলাটি বিস্ময়ে অবাক হয়ে গেলেন। সে তাকে কিছু বলল না, কিন্তু তার ছেলেকে বলল।
Both mother and son began to watch the ghost more narrowly.

One day the old woman knew that there was no fire in the house, and she knew also that her daughter-in-law had not gone out of doors to get it; and yet, strange (স্ট্রেঞ্জ – অবাক) to say, the hearth (হার্থ – চুল্লি) in the kitchen-room was quite (কোয়াইট – সম্পূর্নভাবে) in a blaze (ব্লেজ – জ্বলজ্বল করা).
একদিন বৃদ্ধ মহিলা জানতেন যে বাড়িতে আগুন জ্বালানোর কোনো ব্যবস্থা নেই, এবং তিনি এও জানতেন যে তার পুত্রবধূ এটা আনতে বাড়িরে বাইরেও যায়নি; এবং তুবও, বলতে অবাক লাগে, রান্নাঘরের চুল্লিটা বেশ জ্বলছিল।
she went in, and, to her infinite (ইনফাইনাইট – অসীম) surprise, found that her daughter-in-law was not using any fuel (ফুয়েল – জ্বালানী) for cooking, but had thrust into the oven her foot, which was blazing brightly (ব্রাইটলি – উজ্জ্বলভাবে).

The son witnessed those very acts of the ghost which his mother had seen.

An Ojha was therefore sent for. The exorcist (এক্সোরসিস্ট – ওধা) came, and wanted in the first instance (ইন্সট্যান্স – দৃষ্টান্ত) to ascertain (অ্যাসারশান – নিশ্চিত করা) whether the woman was a real woman or a ghost.
অতঃপর একটা ওঝা ঢাকা হল। ওঝা আসল, এবং প্রথম দৃষ্টান্তেই নিশ্চিত হতে চাইল যে মহিলাটি সত্যিই একজন মহিলা না একটা ভূত।
For this purpose (পারপোস – উদ্দেশ্য) he lighted a piece of turmeric (টারমারিক – হলুদ) and set it below the nose of the supposed (সাপোসড – ছদ্মবেশী) woman.
এই উদ্দেশ্যে সে এক টুকরো হলুদ পোড়াল এবং সেটা ছদ্মবেশী মহিলাটির নাকের নীচে ধরল।
Now this was an infallible (ইনফলিবল – অব্যর্থ) test, as no ghost, whether male or female, can put up with the smell of burnt (বার্নট – পোড়ানো) turmeric.

The woman was caught hold of by main force and asked who she was.

তারপর ভূতটা একটা দৃঢ় নাকিস্বরে বলল যে – কারণ সমস্ত ভূতই নাকের মাধ্যমে কথা বলে – সে হল একজন শাঁখচুন্নি, সে পুকুরপাড়ে একটা গাছে থাকে – সে যুবতী ব্রাহ্মনিকে ধরেছিল এবং তার গাছের একটা গর্তে তাকে রেখে দিয়েছে কারণ একদিন রাত্রে সে তাকে স্পর্শ করেছিল, এবং যদি কোনো ব্যাক্তি গর্তের কাছে যায় তাহলে সে মহিলাটিকে দেখতে পাবে।
The woman was brought from the tree almost dead; the ghost was again shoebeaten (শুবিটেন – জুতোপেটা), after which process, on her declaring solemnly (সোলেমলি – গম্ভীরভাবে) that she would not again do any harm (হার্ম – ক্ষতি) to the Brahman and his family, she was released from the spell (স্পেল – জাদুমন্ত্র) of the Ojha and sent away; and the wife of the Brahman recovered (রিকোভার্ড – সুস্থ হওয়া) slowly.
মহিলাটিকে মৃতপ্রায় অবস্থায় গাছ থেকে নামানো হল; ভূতটিকে আবার জুতোপেটা করা হল, এর ফলে, সে গম্ভীরভাবে ঘোষনা করল যে ব্রাহ্মন এবং তার পরিবারকে সে আর কোনো ক্ষতি করবে না, তাই তাকে ওঝার জাদুমন্ত্র থেকে মুক্তি দেওয়া হল এবং ছেড়ে দেওয়া হল; এবং ব্রাহ্মনের স্ত্রী ধীরে ধীরে সুস্থ হয়ে উঠল।
