A great deal of general amusement (অ্যামুউসমেন্ট – আমোদপ্রমোদ) was caused by this incident. The bather then requested the monkey to return his lion cloth.

While all this was going on, I noticed a gentleman come up to our compartment.

A porter was carrying his luggage (লাগেজ – মালপত্র) which include a big steel trunk, several small baskets and a brass (ব্রাশ – পিতল) jug.
একজন কুলি তার মালপত্র বইছিল যার মধ্যে ছিল একটা বড়ো স্টিলের ট্রাঙ্ক, অনেকগুলি ছোটো ছোটো বেতের ঝুড়ি এবং একটা পিতলের জগ।
The man was shouting at the porter to hurry up with the luggage.
লোকটি কুলিটিকে চিৎকার করে তাড়াতাড়ি মালপত্রগুলি বয়ে আনতে বললেন।
Suddenly a monkey leapt down form the top of our compartment and snatched away the fine embroidered cap of the businessman.
হঠাৎই একটা বানর আমাদের কামরার উপর থেকে লাফিয়ে নামল এবং ব্যবসায়ী ব্যক্তিটির নকশা করা টুপিটা ছিনিয়ে নিয়ে চলে গেল।
The monkey then climbed up the neem tree. “What have you done, monkey !” The businessman shouted, in utter confusion.
বানরটি তারপর নিমগাছে উঠে পড়ল। “এটা তুই কী করলি, বানর!” ব্যবসায়ীটি চিৎকার করে বললেন, ভীষণ হতভম্ব হয়ে।
His round and smug (স্মাগ – পরিপাটি) face was covered with perspiration (পার্সপিরেশান- ঘাম). He ran towards the tree over the pump and stood threatening (থ্রিটেনিং – হুমকি) the monkey.

Meanwhile, a fruit hawker had come forward, pushing his little cart (কার্ট – ঠ্যালাগাড়ি). He told the Sethji that he wold rescue (রেসকিউ – উদ্ধার করা) the cap.

He stretched out his left hand for the cap. The monkey seemed to hesitate (হেজিটেট – ইতস্তত করা).

“Ao, ao, come down,” the vendor coaxed (কোক্সড – তোষামোদ করা) the monkey. He lifted the bananas higher up.
“আয়, আয়, নেমে আয়,” বিক্রেতাটি বানরটিকে তোষামোদ করতে লাগল। সে কলাগুলোকে আরও কিছুটা উপরের দিকে তুলে ধরল।
The monkey responded (রেসপন্স – সাড়া দেওয়া) by climbing down cautiously (কশাশলি – সতর্কভাবে) to a branch near the vendor.
বানরটি বিক্রেতার কাছাকাছি একটা গাছের ডালে সতর্কতার সাথে নেমে এসে তার ডাকে সাড়া দিল।
The whole platform became silent and waited, with bated breath, for the impossible to happen.

The vendor cooed (কোড – ডাকা) in a soft voice, Ao, ao, to the monkey. The monkey, looking this side and that, accepted the bargain (বারগেন – আদান-প্রদান).
বিক্রেতাটি নরম কন্ঠস্বর দিয়ে ডাকতে লাগল, আয়, আয় বলে, বানরটিকে। বানরটি, এদিক ওদিক দেখে, আদান-প্রদানের শর্তটা মেনে নিল।
It took over the bananas with his right hand and released (রিলিজ – ছেড়ে দেওয়া) the embroidered cap, slightly crumpled (ক্রাম্পলড – ভাঁজ খাওয়া), with its left hand.
সে ডানহাত দিয়ে কলাগুলো নিল এবং নকশা করা টুপিটা, যেটা কিছুটা ভাঁজ খাওয়া ছিল, ছেড়ে দিল তার বাম হাত দিয়ে।
The spectators (স্পেকটেটরস – দর্শকগন) shouted in praise. The fruit vendor came and humbly (হাম্বলি – ভদ্রতার সাথে) offered the Sethji his cap.
দর্শক প্রশংসায় চিৎকার করে উঠল। ফল বিক্রেতা আসল এবং ভদ্রভাবে শেঠজিকে তার টুপিটা ফেরত দিল।
“They are hungry,” he said, “so they disturb the passengers.”
“তারা ক্ষুধার্ত,” সে বলল, “তাই তারা যাত্রীদের বিরক্ত করে।”
“Acha,” said the Sethji, and turned to go into the compartment.
“আচ্ছা,” শেঠজি বলল, এবং কামরায় যাওয়ার জন্য ঘুরল।
The vendor said, “Sethji, please give me two annas for the bananas which I had to offer to the monkey.”
বিক্রেতা বলল, “শেঠজি, দয়া করে আমাকে দু-আনা দিন কলাগুলোর জন্য, যেগুলো আমি বানরটাকে দিয়েছিলাম।”
“Two annas! What impudence (ইমপুডেন্স – বেহায়াপনা)!” Sethji shouted each word in disgust (ডিসগাস্ট – বিরক্তি) at the grimy (গ্রিমি – ধূলো-ময়লা মাখা) fruit vendor.
“দু আনা! কী বেহায়াপনা!” শেঠজি প্রত্যেকটা শব্দ বিরক্তির সাথে বললেন ধূলো-ময়লা মাখা ফল বিক্রেতার দিকে।
“Please give him the money, Sethji,” the rest of the compartment said.
“দয়া করে তাকে পয়সাটা দিয়ে দিন, শেঠজি,” কামরার বাকি যাত্রীরা বলল।
“Acha, here are four annas for you, porter, and an anna for you, fruit vendor!” Sethji said.
“আচ্ছা, এই চার আনা তোমার জন্য, কুলি, এবং এক আনা তোমার জন্য, ফল বিক্রেতা!” শেঠজি বলল।
“But I carried two big pieces of luggage,” the porter wailed (ওয়েলড – দুঃখ প্রকাশ করা).
“কিন্তু আমি তো দুটো বেশ বড়ো বড়ো মাল বয়ে নিয়ে এলাম,” কুলিটি দুঃখ করে বলল।
“Go! Go! Crook!” Sethji thundered (থান্ডার – গর্জে ওঠা) at the protesting porter. The porter left.
“যাও! যাও! জোচ্চোর!” শেঠজি গর্জে উঠলেন প্রতিবাদী কুলির দিকে। কুলিটি চলে গেল।
The fruit vendor persisted (পারসিস্ট – জেদ ধরে থাকা), “Sethji, be just, I saved your honourable (অনারেবল – সম্মানীয়) cap…” The businessman threw an anna towards him on the platform.
ফল বিক্রেতা জেদ ধরে রইল, “শেঠজি, ন্যায়পরায়ন হন, আমি আপনার সম্মানীয় টুপিটা বাঁচালাম…” ব্যবসায়ী মানুষটি এক আনা তার দিকে প্ল্যাটফর্মে ওপর ছুঁড়ে দিলেন।
The guard’s whistle blew. The train was about to depart. The vendor looked in through the compartment window.
প্রহরী বাঁশি বাজাল। ট্রেনটা প্রায় ছাড়ার মুখে। বিক্রেতা কামরার জানালা দিয়ে ভিতরে দেখল।
“Sethji, do not rob the poor!”
“শেঠজি, গরীবদের লুঠবেন না।!”
“Ja, ja! Take rest,” the Sethji scowled (স্কাউলড – চোখ রাঙানো) at him.
“যা, যা! বিশ্রাম কর,” শেঠজি চোখ রাঙিয়ে তাকে বলল।
The train had begun to move. The fruit vendor first ran along with it, then got on to the footstep and clung (ক্লাং – ধরা) to the window, pleading (প্লিডিং – অনুরোধ করা).
ট্রেনটা চলতে শুরু করল। ফল বিক্রেতা প্রথমে ট্রেনের সাথে ছুটতে লাগল, তারপর পাদানিতে উঠল এবং জানালাটি আঁকড়ে ধরল, অনুরোধ করতে করতে।
But Sethji had turned his head away. He was looking out of the window at the goods train on the other side.
কিন্তু শেঠজি অন্য দিকে তার মুখ ফিরিয়ে নিলেন। তিনি জানালা দিয়ে অন্যদিকে মালবাহী ট্রেনটার দিকে দেখতে লাগলেন।
The train had passed the whole length of the platform and the frustrated vendor finally dropped off.
ট্রেনটা পুরো প্ল্যাটফর্মটা অতিক্রম করল এবং হতাশ বিক্রেতা অবশেষে নেমে গেল।
Sethji turned round to all of us and began to justify (জাস্টিফাই – বিচার করা) himself, “It he did not want to help me to get my cap back, he should not have offered the monkey the bananas. I did not ask him to help.”
শেঠজি আমাদের সকলের দিকে ঘুরলেন এবং নিজেকে ঠিক বলে প্রমান করতে শুরু করলেন, “যদি সে আমাকে সাহায্য না করত আমার টুপিটা ফিরে পাওয়ার জন্য, তাহলে তাকে বানরটিকে কলাগুলো দিতে হত না। আমি তাকে সাহায্য করতে বলিনি।”
I felt that all the other passengers had sympathy (সিমপ্যাথি – সহানুভূতি) for the poor vendor.
আমার মনে হল যে সমস্ত যাত্রীদের সহানুভূতি ছিল বেচারা বিক্রেতার জন্য।
The whole amusing episode had ended in a bitter (বিটার – তিক্ত) sense of grievance (গ্রিভেন্স – ক্ষোভ) against the rich businessman who had been so hard to the generous-hearted fruit vendor.
পুরো মজার ঘটনাটি শেষ হল ধনী ব্যবসায়ীর প্রতি একটা তিক্ত ক্ষোভ নিয়ে যিনি উদার-হৃদয়ের ফল বিক্রেতার প্রতি ভীষণ কঠোর ছিলেন।
I drew a cartoon of Sethji and showed my drawing to all the other passengers except him. Everyone laughed. The more we laughed, Sethji became the more uncomfortable (আনকমফোর্টেবল – অস্বস্তিবোধ).
আমি শেঠজির একটা কার্টুন এঁকেছিলাম এবং তাকে ছাড়া সমস্ত যাত্রীদের আমার আঁকা ছবি দেখিয়েছিলাম। প্রত্যেকেই হেসেছিল। যত বেশি আমরা হেসেছিলাম, তত বেশি শেঠজি অস্বস্তিবোধ করতে লাগলেন।
